Scaling Heights and Chasing Dreams

By Nur Mirrah Amit, Year 2, Diploma in Mass Media Management

Shahril Khairi, a first year student majoring in Business Management, was genuinely taken aback when he was told that I would be doing a feature on him. But when you’re an all-rounder student with a scholarship no one should be surprised at all.

The 18-year-old student never failed to amaze me at every turn during this interview. Shahril, who was a successful DPA applicant, decided to pursue a Diploma in Business Management in NYP after hearing so much about it. Considering that the distance from his home was reasonable and that his parents strongly supported the choice he intended to make, he took a leap of faith and went on-board with the idea of becoming a full-time student at NYP.

Shahril is also a proud recipient of the NYP Scholarship. “I applied for this as I thought that it would be something nice to have on my resume,” Shahril confided.

The active Adventure Club member was also the only one among his many siblings to have received such a scholarship. Despite that, things at home and in school have been relatively the same for him. The family-oriented Shahril often spends time with his family. They would usually have dinners together at home and met up quite regularly to catch up. As much as he enjoys being around family, Shahril knows how to manage his time well and sometimes, spends some time with friends during the weekends.

That’s not all! Shahril is also a fellow social media administrator for the school and he said he certainly enjoys taking up the responsibility given to him, which adds to his busy weeks.

“It’s something new to me, and it’s something that I could learn from. Social Media is an aspect of marketing, and I was hoping I could put the experience gained to good use,” explained Shahril.

When left with free time, the aspiring entrepreneur relaxes or plays online games. Shahril is quite fond of strumming tunes on his guitar and cycling. Unlike many guys I know, he is actually quite an avid reader. He confessed that his favourite book is actually Nicholas Spark’s ‘The Last Song’, and that he definitely preferred the novel to the movie. Sharil’s also counts ‘The Beetles’ as his favourite band and professed a love for all things rock.

Intrigued by this man of few words, I asked him what his favourite quote was and this was his reply after much thought:

“Pursue excellence and success will follow”.

Wise beyond his years, I was truly blown away. Yet, when I casually asked him what was the word he would use to describe himself, Shahril was at a lost for words.

But, I know a word or two – ambitious and charming.

I’m sure anyone who knows Shahril would agree with me too.
